Community-Wide Branding Initiative

The Owatonna Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism in partnership with the City of Owatonna and business leaders launched a research-driven, community-wide branding initiative.

This project helped us uncover what about Owatonna is distinct, authentic, and ownable so we can succinctly highlight our key strengths through a brand we can all embrace.

The brand will be used as a tool to help us compete in the marketplace and advance our economic objectives, such as business and resident attraction.




Update 10/25/23

Owatonna is reaching the end of year one in a research-driven, community-wide identity initiative. This effort will help Owatonna stand out in the marketplace as we grow toward our preferred future. Our goal is to increase interest and investment in our community from residents, entrepreneurs, companies and visitors. At the end of this first year, we have developed a brand that will allow us to continue sharing our story with a unified voice.

Update 7/10/23

Phase 2: Creativity

In this current stage, the insights and strategy are transformed into tangible creative products that embody Owatonna. The creative workshops have taken place with the committee and the community and as we move forward, the visuals begin to unfold. This process is mainly working with the branding committee and entities utilizing the brand to develop straplines, brand narrative, and a logo family.

The deliverables of this brand will offer usable imagery and content for the City of Owatonna, Owatonna Partners for Economic Development, Mainstreet Owatonna, Visit Owatonna, Owatonna Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, and a version the business community will be able to utilize moving forward in their own materials if they wish.

Color palettes, fonts, and marketing looks are developed during this stage, working closely with the entities that will be utilizing the end product of the brand. During this process a graphic standards guide is also developed to help maintain the integrity of the brand long-term, along with 8-10 community custom deliverables to help assist in communicating the final brand with the community.

You are invited to the Community Creative Workshop presented by North Star Place Branding & Marketing. Hear about the data collected from the community surveys and be part of the creative input for the community-wide brand. Come ready to discuss what’s authentic and distinct in Owatonna and share what you feel makes Owatonna the best place to live, raise a family, or conduct business.

The community-wide branding is a collaborative initiative led by the Owatonna Chamber of Commerce & Tourism, City of Owatonna, Owatonna Partners for Economic Development, Owatonna’s local businesses and organizations, Visit Owatonna, and MainStreet Owatonna.

The research phase of the Owatonna branding process being conducted by the North Star Place Branding & Marketing Team has been completed. The branding committee will be presented with the results of that survey.

Next is the creative phase, insights and strategy are transformed into tangible creative products embodying Owatonna. Straplines, logos, colors, looks, and messaging are created.
